James Raymond Steward Part 2 Heroes and Rebels in the Family Tree – James Raymond Steward After his service in the Nile Expedition and the war in Sudan, James Raymond Steward was transferred to the 2nd Battalion of the Lincolnshire Regiment on November 11, 1898 and subsequently served with the 2nd Battalion when it moved to South Africa to support the British forces in the conflict between Great Britain and the two Boer republics—the South African Republic (Transvaal) and the Orange Free State.  This conflict was better known as the Second Boer War which was fought from October 11, 1899 until May 31, 1902.  For services rendered to His Majesty, King Edward VII, James Raymond Steward was awarded the King’s and Queen’s South Africa Medals with clasps “Cape Colony” and “PAARDEBERG”, 1901 and 1902.   Second Boer War Although it was the largest and most costly war in which the British engaged between the  Napoleonic Wars  and  World War I  (spending more than £200 million), it was fought be
