Sometimes, the strangest
cases of injustice make for the best of stories. I found this crime story
when researching the family tree of Rob
Clarke. (Rob is one of our site group members).
Rob Clarke is the Great-Grandson of Ena Valarie Adams, who is the
daughter of Francis Henry Adams—brother of George “Pikey”
William Welsh Adams (1867-1940). |

Randal Adams was just
shy of his 23rd birthday when he enlisted on August 15, 1915 in the Royal
Navy Reserve. Standing 5 ft. 11-1/2 in tall with hazel eyes and fresh
complexion, he would have made his parents proud to see him in his uniform
for the first time. |

Family Tree |
Sometimes we forget
about the “other” heroes in our family tree. Those would be the wives,
mothers and children left behind by the tragic deaths caused by war. In honor
of Mother’s Day (March 27, 2022 in England and May 8, 2022 in the
United States), we celebrate those women who were left behind to
care for the families of our ancestors. |

Heroes and Rebels in the
Family Tree--A Fisherman's life--Horace Thrower |
When I received my copy
of "Living From The Sea" by David Butcher, I was fascinated with
the first-person narrative as told by some of the old fishermen in the time
when George "Pikey" William Adams-Welch was fishing the sea for
herring. I knew that life in those days was rough, but reading the stories from
their own perspective helped to bring them closer to understanding the
trials, tribulations and sorrows they felt. |

Mewse family history |
There have been Mewses
in Lowestoft from the 16th Century to today, and apart from a couple of short
periods they remained in Lowestoft until the ease of 20th century transport
enabled a spread world - wide. I have been helped in this research by Russell
Mewse and Lisa Eade, to whom, along with several others, go my thanks. |

Despite the many years
of heroism by Robert William Hook, controversy over his lifeboat crew's
failure to respond in a timely manner during a disastrous storm in 1882
resulted in his termination as coxswain for the Royal National Lifeboat
Institution. A board of Inquiry was convened to look into the circumstances
surrounding the sinking of three vessels. |

Trades Tuesday—Firemen,
Trimmers and Stokers |
The 'down-below' seamen
were responsible for working the boiler rooms and their adjacent coal
bunkers. Collectively, they were known as the 'Black Gang', a term that
lasted well into the diesel era. Strictly speaking, 'Black Gang' referred to
the trimmers and firemen - the men in the stokeholds and the bunkers.
'Stoker' and 'fireman' are two different titles for the same job, but the
term 'fireman' is almost exclusively used on ships. |

Market |
Norwich Market (also
known as Norwich Provision Market) is an outdoor market consisting of around
200 stalls in central Norwich, England. Founded in the latter part of the
11th century to supply Norman merchants and settlers moving to the area
following the Norman conquest of England, it replaced an earlier market a
short distance away. It has been in operation on the present site for over
900 years. |

(Sailors and Seamen) |
A nice post written by Simon Howard in 2021 and
posted by Haydn Brown published on his blog on November 30, 2022. This article illustrates the difficulties
and dangers fishermen and seamen faced in order to take care of their
families. Without modern navigation aids, satellite weather reports and
modern equipment, life for the seafarer was extremely hazardous. |
