Family Vignette--Robert Snowling

Robert Snowling 1839-1916 was one of 12 children (3 did not survive infancy) born to William Snowling (1815-1874) and Mary Ann Day (1815-1893).  Robert was born in March 1839 in Ellingham, Norfolk, England as the second child.  His father was an agricultural labourer in 1851 in the town of Broome, Norfolk, but by 1861, the family had moved to Ellingham, Norfolk to be closer to William’s mother, Amelia, who was 79 years of age.  In 1861, Robert was working as an agricultural labourer.

In June 1863, Robert was engaged to Emily Moore and was married in the local parish church of Ellingham soon after the final Marriage Banns were published on June 21, 1863.  Although Emily was a spinster, she had a young daughter out of wedlock with an unknown father.  The child’s name was Mary Ann Moore.

In just a little over three years after his marriage with Emily Moore, Robert Snowling was already having marital problems with his wife.  Although nothing is known about the specific issues within the marriage, sometimes the fighting became public knowledge.  This was the case in December 1866 when Robert Snowling was charged with doing damage, to the extent of 5 shillings, to the bed linen, the property of Mr. Robert Holbrook, of the King’s Head Inn, where he was lodging.  He was fined, including costs and damage, 11 shillings and 6 pennies.  He was bound over, in the sum of 5 pounds, to keep the peace towards his wife for six months.

Robert and Emily were divorced sometime later and he sought comfort in the arms of Elizabeth Blyth.  Elizabeth Blyth was born in Caister, Norfolk in 1827, making her 12 years older than Robert.  She first married William Brett in 1854 and had one son from that marriage.  Her husband died in 1864.  She then married William Hood in 1872 in Lound, Suffolk.  From that marriage came a daughter.  William Hood died in 1884 making Elizabeth Blyth twice, a widow.

Elizabeth then married Robert Snowling on April 18, 1886 in Lound, Suffolk.  They were married nearly 25 years when Elizabeth Blyth-Brett-Hood-Snowling died in May 1911 in Lound, Suffolk leaving Robert a widower until his death in 1916.
