Family Vignette—William Albrow

Family Vignette—William Albrow

William Albrow was born on April 17, 1794 at Reedham, Norfolk, England.  He was the first born of William Albrow and Sarah Thornton and was christened on April 19, 1794 at St. John the Baptist church in Reedham.

His father William Albrow was also born in Reedham, Norfolk in 1770 and married Sarah Thornton at St. John the Baptist church, Reedham, in 1793.  They had four children there, before moving to Lowestoft where a further ten were born. Their children were:

1.      William Albrow 1794–1817

2.      Mary Ann Albrow 1796–1807

3.      Jeremiah Albrow 1797–1881

4.      Charles Albrow 1799–1872

5.      Sarah Albrow 1801–1801

6.      Sarah Ann Albrow 1802–1895

7.      Susannah Albrow 1805–1872

8.      Mary Ann Albrow 1807–1879

9.      Martha Albrow 1808–1868

10.  Elizabeth Albrow 1810–1880

11.  Harriet Albrow 1812–1846

12.  Richard Albrow 1813–1890

13.  Louisa Albrow 1814–1887

14.  George Albrow 1817–1891

The family lived in Kirkley and also in Dukes Head St. William, Sr. was a wherryman and also a publican.

In 1810, at the age of 16, William, Jr. was employed as a ‘Wherryman’, following in his father’s footsteps.  He later married Margaret Colby at All Saints Parish, Pakefield, Suffolk, England on December 5, 1816.

Margaret Colby was born on January 9, 1705 at Pakefield, Suffolk, England to William Colby 1764-1841 and Maria Panks 1766-1823.  Although the distance between Pakefield and Reedham would have been considerable at the time, the waterways connecting their two homes and with William’s occupation as a wheryman, it is easy to see how their paths may have crossed.

The December wedding between William and Margaret may have been prudent as Margaret was already about three months pregnant.  Their son, William was born on June 1, 1817, in Lowestoft, Suffolk, England and baptized in the local parish church on June 6, 1817.

Just a month after William’s birth, his father drowned on July 18, 1817 in the river Waveney near “Seven Mile House”.  He was only 23 years of age when he drowned.  He was buried in St. Margaret’s churchyard in Lowestoft on July 22, 1817.

After William’s death, his widow married William’s younger brother Jeremiah Albrow 1787-1881. In Gorleston, Suffolk, England.  They had eight children.

William Albrow is memorialized at The National Maritime Museum, Greenwich
