Family Vignette—Jane Kent

Jane Kent
Jane Kent was born in 1801 in Stoke Damerel, Devon, England to Thomas Kent 1767-  and Susannah Hopping 1769- .  She was baptised on September 19, 1802 in the Parish Church of Stoke Damerel and married on November 30, 1824 in St. Mary’s, Brixham, Devon, England to William Newman 1800-1868.  Jane died in March 1880 at Totnes, Devon, England at the age of 79.

William and Jane are known to have 6 children.  They were:

1.       William Thomas Kent Newman 1825- .  William married Emma 1829-  in January 1849 at Brixham and had one known child.  His son was Alfred Newman 1851- .

2.       Jane Newman 1828-1880.  Jane married Joseph Clarke Shields Ward 1832-1867 on March 5, 1850 at Brixham.  Their children were:

a.       John Daniel Ward 1850-1881 

b.       Susan Mary Jane Ward 1852-1915

c.       Ellen Ward 1855-1937

d.       Mary Jane Newman Ward 1857-1932

e.       Thomas Kent Ward 1859-1920

f.        Jane Newman Ward 1861-1936

g.       Sarah Clarke Ward 1864-1953

h.       Joseph Richard Clark Ward 1865- .

This family seems to have been hit by tragedy. While his trawler was fishing out of Ramsgate, Joseph Clarke Shields Ward died in 1867. In 1871 his son Thomas aged 11 is in the District Orphan Asylum for the Children of Deceased British Merchant Seamen, Wanstead, Essex, and other children are living with their grandmother and an aunt in Brixham. Their oldest son Daniel is recorded as mate of a trawler lying at Ramsgate in the 1871 census, said to be aged 22. By 1881 Tom Ward is back in Brixham and married to Sally. In 1891 he is skipper of the trawler 'Pickwick', lying at Milford Haven; Sally and their 4 children are in Brixham. By the 1901 census they have 8 children; Tom is not listed that year, but this was very common for fishermen.

3.       Richard Newman 1831-1897.  Richard married Mary Ann Harris 1832-1880 in May 1854 at All Saints in Brixham.  They remained married until her death in 1880.  He later married Elinor 1838-

4.       Philip Kent Newman 1833-1902 was an Able Seaman in 1861 serving aboard the fishing vessel Watersprite. Philip married Mary Lavis 1838- at All Saints in Brixham.  Their children were:

b.       Susan A Newman 1869-
c.      Betsy Lavis Newman 1871-1946
d.       Sarah Jane Kent Newman 1873-
e.       William James Newman 1876-
f.        Salina Newman 1879-

5.       Susan Newman 1836-1898.  Susan married James Tuck 1836-1902 in October 1863 at Brixham, All Saints.  Their children were:

a.       Annie Kent Tuck 1864-1907

b.       Alfred John Tuck 1866-1867

c.       Clara Ellen Tuck 1867-1941

d.       Alice Tuck 1870-1881

e.       Sydney Ernest Tuck 1875-1956

f.        Ethel May Tuck 1878-1879



 

6.       Henry John Newman 1839-1925.  Henry married Elizabeth Guest 1839-1922 in October 1861 at Totnes, Devon, England. Their children were:

a.       Annie Jane Newman 1873-

b.       Eleanor Elizabeth Newman 1876-

c.      Harry G Newman 1882-

 

Genealogy:  Jane Kent 1801-1880 was the mother of Jane Newman 1828-1880 and her son was John Daniel Ward 1850-1881 and his daughter was Louisa Violet Ward 1878-1945 and her daughter was Myrtle L M Bryant 1917-2008 and her daughter was Patricia Josephine Payne 1939- and her husband was Brian Edward Head 1938-2007 and his mother was Bessie Mabel Utting 1915-1995 and her mother was Clara Rose Welsh 1878-1964 and her father was James Welsh 1845-1919 and his sister was Susannah Welsh 1847-1898 and her son was George "Pikey" William Welch-Adams 1867-1940.
