Heroes and Rebels in the Family Tree—Jehosaphat Davy, Mayor of Norwich

 


Jehosaphat Davy was born in March 1615 in New Buckenham, Norfolk, England and christened on March 17, 1615.  He was the sheriff of the city of Norwich in 1667 and mayor in 1678. On March 7, 1654, he married Susan Chambers of Bawburgh, in St. Clement’s church, Norwich.  In 1668 he was an occupier in All Saints’ parish.  His daughter Anne married alderman Thomas Postle, and died in 1702.  Jehosaphat was a beer brewer and died in 1689 at the age of seventy-two years, and was buried in St. Jame’s church.

Very little is known of Jehosaphat Davy’s family ancestry, except his father was named Jehosaphat Davy 1579-1637 and his mother is not known.  His grandparents were William Davy 1540-1600 and Margaret 1542-1612.

Jehosaphat Davy was known to have a daughter from his marriage to Susan Chambers.  His daughter Ann was born about 1635 in Brumstead, Norfolk, England.  She was married in Brumstead on August 23 1658 to Thomas Postle.  

They had nine children:

5.       Jane Postle 1674–1754

6.       Ann Postle 1676–1744

Genealogy:  Jehosaphat Davy 1615-1689 was the father of Ann Davy 1642-1702 and her son was Christopher Postle 1660-1720 and his daughter was Mary Postle 1692- and her son was William Heath 1716-1747 and his daughter was Ann Heath 1747-1789 and her son was John Baker 1775- and his son was David Staff Baker 1805-1869 and his wife was Hannah Forster 1803-1863 and her brother was Isaac Forster 1801-1890 and his son was Thomas Forster 1837-1888 and his daughter was Caroline Forster 1864-1906 and her husband was George “Pikey” William Welch-Adams 1867-1940.

  Margaret Ellen Lumsdaine (1875-1950) married Robert Willis (1877-1951) on December 23, 1900 at St. Margaret’s Church in Lowestoft, Suffolk, England.  Their children were Helen Rachel Lumsdaine (1897), Frederick George Lumsdaine (1898), Robert Willis Lumsdaine (1900), Joseph Willis (1903), Edward (1905), Jessie M E Willis (1906) and Mary Willis (1908).   Life on Ber Street in the 1850’s. Ber Street, an ancient Roman Road, has been a major route out of the city since the 12th century, but by 1696, development in the area was limited to the street itself.   Ber Street’s function as a cattle drove is reflected in its width, a key feature of the street. It was the location of many butchers and slaughterhouses;   it was known locally as ‘Blood and Guts Street’. The area between Ber Street and King Street was densely built up by the 1840’s with many yards and courts leading off the street.   It also became home to the Italian community, with ice cream parlours and pubs.   However, slum clearances between the 1930’s and 1960’s, together with Second World War bomb damage means that few houses from before the war remain.   During the 1930s more than 35 yards with almost 300 homes were flattened.
