Family Vignette--Bertie William Charles Thacker

 

 

In a previous posting, we had the opportunity to learn a little bit about Andy Pearce’s great grandfather Bertie Edward Thacker.  Now, our attention is focused on Bertie’s only son, Bertie William Charles Thacker who was awarded the Queen’s Fire Service Medal for distinguished service in 1975. 

Bertie William Charles Thacker was born in Kessingland, Suffolk, England on September 18, 1921 to Bertie Edward Thacker 1884-1940 and Clarinda Eliza Blowers 1884-1948. 



He was the only son of six children born to Bertie and Clarinda Thacker.  One daughter did not survive infancy.  

Their children were:

1.      Stella Priscilla Thacker 1906-1992

2.      Maud Louise Thacker 1908-1908

3.      Kathleen Ena Thacker 1909-1986

4.      Mary Emma Thacker 1919-1999

5.      Bertie William Charles Thacker 1921-2015

6.      Rhona Irene Thacker 1925-2017

Bertie Thacker was 54 years of age when he received the Queen’s Fire Service Medal during which time he was the assistant chief fire officer for Cleveland. Bert went to St. Margaret’s College in Corton Road before joining the Merchant Navy.  When he left in 1947, he joined the old Middlesbrough fire brigade and was promoted to leading fireman in 1951, sub-officer in 1953 and station officer in 1958.

He was Teeside’s deputy fire chief and was appointed as the assistant chief fire officer for Cleveland in February 1973.  At the time, he was living in Hazel Grove, Marton.

Bertie was married and had two children.  He died on April 21, 2015 in Scarborough, Yorkshire, England.

 

 

Genealogy:  Bertie William Charles Thacker 1921-2015 was the son of Bertie Edward Thacker 1884-1940 and his father was Samuel Thacker (Fisherman) 1854-1947 and his mother was Pheobe Cole 1820-1903 and her mother was Lydia A Cotton 1794-1876 and her father was John Cotton 1766-1832 and his mother was Elizabeth Foster 1732-1780 and her brother was Samuel Forster 1740-1815 and his son was William Forster 1778-1854 and his son was Isaac Forster 1801-1890 and his son was Thomas Forster 1837-1888 and his daughter was Caroline Forster 1864-1906 and her husband was George “Pikey” William Welch-Adams 1867-1940.
