Heroes and Rebels in the Family Tree--Ernest Bultitude

 A Civilian, Ernest died on August 21, 1940 aged 68. 

Ernest was born at Lowestoft on November 26,  1871, the son of William Bultitude 1819-1894 and Matha Harmer 1831-1910. In 1881 his family lived at 51 Tonning Street, and this was still their home in 1891. As a young man Ernest began working as a fisherman and in 1897 he was awarded his certificate of competency as a skipper.  

On December 26,  1898 Ernest married Florence Louisa Outlaw at Saint Margaret’s Church in Lowestoft. Ernest was a smacksman living at 78 Wollaston Road and Florence lived at 38 Mariners Street. In 1901 they lived at 77 Wollaston Road, and Ernest was a fisherman, and by 1911 they were living at The Wounded Heart, Saint Peter’s Street, and Ernest was the public house licensee. By 1915 their home was at 15 Winnipeg Road. 



Ernest and Florence had two children.  They were:

1.       Florence Louisa Bultitude born in 1902 and died 1981.

2.       Ernest Edward Bultitude born in 1906 and died in 1921.


On April 7, 1915 Ernest joined the Royal Naval Reserve as a Temporary Skipper, number WSA 1372. From April 28, 1915 he served with the trawler Viking II, and in late 1917 he joined the Golden Spur. Ernest was demobilised on August 22, 1919.

By 1920 Ernest, Florence, and family, were living at 73 London Road South. In 1921 Ernest was the Skipper of the trawler Bona Fide, LT 778. In 1939 Ernest was still a fisherman.  

On August 21,  1940 German aircraft dropped twelve high explosive bombs in the vicinity of Harvey, Wilson and Osborne Shipwrights and Jewson’s Timber Yard at Horn Hill. Ernest was killed at the Harvey, Wilson and Osborne air raid shelter. In that raid six people, including Ernest, were killed and seven injured.

Genealogy:  Ernest Bultitude 1871-1940 was the son of William Bultitude 1819-1894 and his mother was Maria Wright 1782-1858 and her sister was Mary Ann Wright 1773-1842 and her daughter was Phoebe Dann 1796-1878 and her husband was Thomas Francis White 1797-1872 and his sister was Hannah Francis 1800-1861 and her daughter was Ann Francis 1819- and her son was James Taylor 1844-1915 and his wife was Mary Ann Powles 1856-1927 and her mother was Amy Wooltorton 1820-1875 and her mother was Mary Baldry 1785-1856 and her father was William Baldry 1763-1838 and his father was William Felder Baldry 1729-1813 and his brother was John Baldry 1755-1833 and his daughter was Susanna Baldry 1774-1858 and her daughter was Phoebe Mayes 1804-1873 and her son was Thomas Forster 1837-1888 and his daughter was Caroline Forster 1864-1906 and her husband was George “Pikey” William Welch-Adams 1867-1940.
