Heroes and Rebels in the Family Tree—Ernest James Martin

 


A Private with the 7th Battalion, Ernest died on 9th of August 1916 at the age of 30. 

Ernest was born at Lowestoft on 30 November 1885, a son of Benjamin William Martin and Ellen Adams. He was baptised at Saint Margaret's Church, Lowestoft, on 5 September 1886. In 1891 his family lived at 217 Clapham Road, but the Census shows that Ernest was a patient at Lowestoft Hospital when the census was taken. From 29 June 1896 Ernest attended Saint Margaret's Boys School. By 1901 the family were living at 200 Clapham Road, and this was still the family home in 1911. 

On 15 April 1912 Ernest married Grace Wharton at Saint Margaret's Church, Lowestoft. Ernest was living at 200 Clapham Road and working as a fisherman. Grace lived at 245 Raglan Street.  Ernest and Grace had a home at 32 Jacob's Street, Lowestoft. 

Ernest and Grace had two children.  They were:

1.      Doris Lillian Grace Martin 1913-2012

2.      Ernest Thomas “Tom” Martin 1915-1989

Ernest volunteered and joined the Army at Lowestoft. He served with the Suffolk Regiment and on 11 August 1915 he arrived in France to join the 7th Battalion.


On 7 August 1916 the 7th Battalion took over trenches west of Pozieres, including Ration Trench. After repeated attacks the enemy took Ration Trench on 8 August. The next day the Battalion were given the task of attacking Ration Trench in an attempt to retake it from the enemy.  

Ernest was reported missing on 9 August and later it was presumed that he had been killed in action on that date. 

Grace died in 1918 and their two children, Doris and Ernest, lived with a guardian, Mrs. Laura Emily Fisher (nee Knights), at 2 Beccles Road, Lowestoft.


Genealogy:  Ernest James Martin 1885-1916 was the son of Ellen Adams 1858-1928 and her sister was Mary Jane "Polly" Adams 1849-1935 and her daughter was Ellen Harriet Breach 1881-1965 and her son was Mansell Moullin Spendler 1906-1942 and his wife was Ivy Sylvia Turrell 1908-1992 and her mother was Pamela May Alexandra Utting 1880-1943 and her mother was Elizabeth Durrant 1849-1930 and her mother was Maria Welch 1826-1896 and her father was Sherrard Welch 1791-1856 and his brother was John Welch 1787-1884 and his son was John Welch 1812-1884 and his daughter was Susannah Welsh 1847-1898 and her son was George "Pikey" William Welch-Adams 1867-1940.

  Heroes and Rebels in the Family Tree—The Crew of the Fishing Trawler “Labrador”   On 23 January 1915 the trawler Labrador, LT 1165, left Lowestoft for the fishing grounds. The trawler was due back in Lowestoft on Sunday 31 st in order for her catch to be ready for the Monday market. The trawler was not seen again and it was presumed that the trawler had struck a mine and sank with all eight crew.  The eight crewmembers who perished were: Skipper, Stephen Peek – Mate, Henry George Adams (age 34) – 1st Engineer, Albert John Newstead – 2nd Engineer, Harry G. Sparks – Trimmer, Emanuel Stephen Peek – Third-Hand, Felix Frankling – Deckhand, Fredrick W. Rushmore – Cook, Samuel Martin. The body of the skipper Stephen Peak was later brought up in the trawl nets of Kestrel. Family Vignette -- Hannah Louisa Albrow

  When Hannah Louisa Albrow was born on March 22, 1838, in Kirkley, Suffolk, England, her father, Michael Albrow, was 28, and her mother, Martha Albrow, was 29. Although her mother and father shared the same last name, it is not believed they are related after going back 4 generations in each side of the family.   Hannah was baptized in the church of St. Peter and St. John at Kirkley, Suffolk on April 22, 1838 with the name of Anna Louisa. She married Robert Wilson on May 20, 1862. They had nine children in 18 years. After the birth of their fifth child, Albert Edward, Hannah and Robert emigrated to New Zealand and settled in Waimate where they owned a farm. They had four additional children born in New Zealand. Robert Wilson died on January 8, 1913 in Shirley, Christchurch, New Zealand. Family Vignette—A story of cousins running wild

  Julia Phoebe Mullender was the eldest daughter of Benjamin Thomas Mullender 1838-1907 and Caroline Elizabeth Colby 1838-1906.  All five of Benjamin and Caroline Mullender’s children were born and baptized in Kirkley, Suffolk, England. Julia was born on March 12, 1864.  Randal Louis was born next on July 26, 1867. Gertrude Maria Rachel followed her brother and was born on February 9, 1870.  The last two children of Benjamin Thomas and Caroline Elizabeth were William Benjamin, born on April 14, 1872 and then Caroline Charlotte born in February 1875.  Benjamin Thomas Mullender was a fisherman and both of his sons became fisherman, starting as early as 12 years of age.   His three daughters married fisherman. Julia, the eldest daughter married John Henry Martin, a fisherman from Pakefield.   They were married on December 24, 1888 at the Parish Church of Pakefield.   By 1906, John Henry and Julia had six children, four boys and two girls.  ...
