Heroes and Rebels in the Family Tree—Thomas James Boyce (Donum Patris Part 3)

Thomas James Boyce was born the illegitimate child of Susannah Jane Boyce on June 29, 1855 in Lowestoft, Suffolk, England.  Susannah was 19 years old at the time of Thomas’ birth and had been engaged to marry Thomas Sewell (Scarll) according to the marriage banns published by St. John Maddermarket, Norwich, Norfolk, England.  However, it appears that Susannah and Thomas never married.

On September 25, 1856, Susannah Jane Boyce died of typhoid fever and her child was left an orphan.  The 1861 census records show Thomas Boyce, age 6, at the Oulton Workhouse.  By age 16, Thomas was engaged as an ordinary seaman aboard the fishing vessel “Australia” skippered by William Benjamin Burwood, with John Baker Marjoram as his mate.

On June 21, 1877, Thomas James Boyce, Age 22, and Elizabeth Ann Adams, age 21, (1856-1892) were married at St. Margaret’s Church in Lowestoft.  Elizabeth was the daughter of Joseph Adams (1824-1912) and Elizabeth Ann Richards (1822-1906).  Thomas and Elizabeth had six children.  They were:

2.      Florence Emily Boyce  1879–1945 married June 16, 1902, Arthur John Pitcher.

3.      Thomas James Boyce 1881–1964 married November 2, 1901, Amy Laura Minister.

6.      Alice Maud Boyce 1885–1886.
