Heroes and Rebels in the Family Tree—William James Haylock

William James Haylock was born about December 1846 in Wenhaston, Suffolk, England.  He was the son of William Haylock 1817-1848 and Anne Knights 1821-1857.  He was baptised on April 26, 1846 at Wenhaston parish church.

At the age of 22, William James Haylock married Martha Jane Toby 1847-1912 on December 14, 1867 at St. Margaret’s Church in Lowestoft.  They had six children:

1.      William James Haylock 1870–1883

2.      Albert Edward Haylock 1871–1935

3.      George Henry Haylock 1874–

4.      James Meadows Haylock 1875–1876

5.      Hilda Elizabeth Haylock 1877–1952

6.      Florence Jane Haylock 1880–1921

7.      Elizabeth Susan Haylock 1883–

William James Haylock grew up to be a fisherman, despite his father being a labourer.  His marriage registration listed his profession in 1867 as fisherman.  The 1871 census shows his wife, Martha and son William James.  Martha’s profession was listed as seaman’s wife.  By 1881, William was the Mate on the fishing vessel “New Moon” with his younger brother Robert Haylock as the ship Master.

By 1883, William James Haylock was sailing as the ship Master on the fishing vessel Mary Ann together with his 14-year-old son William James Haylock, Jr.. who was working as the cook aboard the vessel.

On November 10, 1883, the smack Mary Ann collided with the smack Velox and sank in the North Sea with the loss of four of her five crew. The survivor was rescued by the Velox.  Those losing their lives were:

William Haylock, 39, Master, Lowestoft.

William Haylock, 14, Cook, Lowestoft.

John Apter Christian, 20, Apprentice, Grimsby.

William R. Dixon, 19, Seaman, Lowestoft.

William James Haylock and his son drowned in the sinking of the Mary Ann.  His youngest daughter Elizabeth Susan Haylock was only born 4 days earlier on November 1883.  She would never know her father and elder brother.  Martha died on April 13, 1912 in Lowestoft.

His wife, Martha, never remarried and by 1911, was living with her daughter Hilda and her husband, Henry Gooch and their five children.
